The Attingham Study Week is a strenuous and stimulating nine-day course studying historic houses and their collections. Based in specific regions of Britain and occasionally abroad, a wide range of houses, many of them private, are visited accompanied by tutors. The architecture, gardens and interiors, including collections of paintings, furniture and other decorative arts, are studied within a context of social history. It is intended for museum curators, lecturers, architects, conservationists and others with a keen interest in the fine and decorative arts. Accommodation is in modest hotels where lectures are also given. Limited scholarship assistance is available.
PROGRAMME
The Study Week in 2008 will encompass some of England’s greatest historic houses, many still private, offering magnificent architecture and dazzling collections of fine and decorative art, located in the heart of England. BURGHLEY HOUSE, one of the most splendid “prodigy” houses, was built by William Cecil, Chief Minister to Elizabeth I, and is a powerful statement of the prosperity and self confidence of Elizabethan England. Over the centuries outstanding collections of furniture, oriental porcelain, illusionistic paintings by Antonio Verrio and some 400 Old Master paintings have made it a true treasure house. BOUGHTON HOUSE reveals the French taste of Ralph, Lord Montagu in architecture and decoration, a result of his ambassadorial missions to France. Now a home of Lord Montagu’s descendant, the Duke of Buccleuch, a special study day here will offer a privileged exploration of its architecture, landscape, great paintings, porcelain, fine furniture, magnificent tapestries and silver.
At DRAYTON HOUSE crenellated walls were pierced by Baroque architect William Talman to create a richly embellished entrance to interiors ranging from medieval through to the 18th century which display superb contents, including a remarkable State bed. Sir John Vanbrugh transformed GRIMSTHORPE CASTLE with his bold and dramatic architecture while inside there are remarkable contents to study. ALTHORP, home of the Spencer family, has a fascinating architectural history and also houses one of the finest collections of art in England. Tutored and special access visits will offer a rare opportunity to develop an insight into these and other historic houses of this programme which retain an amazing wealth of contents amassed over generations. Lectures will support the programme and address aspects of landscape, conservation, restoration and management of these great estates in the 21st century.
