ALUMNI VISITS
PARIS & CHANTILLY: Two exhibitions
LE DERNIER SACRE AND
LES TRÈS RICHES HEURES DU DUC DE BERRY
Friday 13 June, 2025
Le Mobilier national, 10.00 – 11.30am
Château de Chantilly, 2.00pm
Curator-led tours of these acclaimed exhibitions have been arranged for the Attingham alumni, thanks to our colleagues in Paris.
In the morning we shall tour Le Dernier Sacre (The Last Coronation) with Hélène Cavalié-d’Escayrac (RCS 2024), deputy director of the Mobilier national collections and one of the exhibition’s curators, followed in the afternoon by a visit to the Château de Chantilly for a welcome by director Mathieu Deldicque (SS 2016, RCS ’18, SP ’22) and a guided visit of Les Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry.
Le Dernier Sacre: On May 29 1825 the last coronation of a French monarch, Charles X, took place accompanied by a spectacular display of works of art. To commemorate the bicentenary, the Mobilier national is exhibiting many of these beautiful objects, brought together from public and private collections. They reveal the skill of French luxury craftsmen and women, heirs to the traditions of the Ancien Régime and yet open to new artistic influences.
Les Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry: Celebrated as the ‘Mona Lisa’ of manuscripts, Les Très Riches Heures is a collection of liturgies and prayers personalised for the duc de Berry, brother of Charles V, that bears witness to the splendour and artistic refinements of the Middle Ages. Produced during the 15th century on vellum, using tempera, gold, silver and ink, this exceptional book counts amongst its illuminators the Limbourg brothers, eminent artists attached to the courts of Burgundy and Berry.
Price of the visits: There is no cost for the visit to Le Dernier Sacre. Tickets for Chantilly are free for ICOM members producing a valid card, otherwise cost 21 Euros, which also gives access to the Château and park for the afternoon.
Alumni will need to pay for their own transport and for any food or accommodation. Please note there will be no capacity to store suitcases on the day.
Closing date for booking: 21 May 2025
As with all alumni events, if the visits are oversubscribed there will be a ballot. Members will be notified if they have a place by 23 May 2025.
