As a tribute to her fifty years’ commitment to The Attingham Trust, one of the causes closest to her heart, and in celebration of the love and respect that so many of us feel towards her, we are setting up a scholarship fund selected by her daughter Isabella to be the focus of professional memory for Dame Rosalind Savill.
The intention of the memorial fund is to raise sufficient capital to allow an annual scholarship to be awarded in perpetuity to an early or mid-career candidate who is professionally engaged in the decorative arts.
Ros first attended The Attingham Summer School in 1975. Within a few years she was not only helping to administer the course but also participated in the lecturing and was soon an established speaker on the Summer School and, later, Royal Collection Studies. Generations of alumni will forever remember the passion and expertise with which she brought Sèvres porcelain to life, enhancing the experience with her endless enthusiasm and wit. It is not an exaggeration to say that she was a major part of the ‘life-changing’ experience many people claim an Attingham course to have been.
For thirty-five years, Ros was a member of the Council and later a Trustee. In both roles, she provided expert guidance and advice on the direction and evolution of Attingham; we continue to prioritize the importance of close-up object study that she believed was so important to an understanding and appreciation not just of porcelain but of all the decorative arts which she loved so much. A scholarship awarded in her name will ensure that this ethos is not only preserved but is handed on to future generations.
The scholarship
The Dame Rosalind Savill Scholarship will be awarded at the discretion of the Trustees and the Scholarship Committee. It will be available to anyone working in the field of decorative arts anywhere in the world for either The Summer School or Royal Collection Studies. In parallel, a scholarship fund has been set up in the USA by the American Friends of Attingham which will sponsor scholarships for US candidates in Ros’s name.
The fees for the Summer School in 2025 are £5,300 and for Royal Collection Studies £4,650. In order to fund a dedicated annual scholarship for the future, we have to raise a six-figure sum to provide the necessary income. Contributions are welcomed from everyone, regardless of whether you have attended an Attingham course or not, for any amount, and money can be pledged in instalments. We are extremely fortunate to be able to announce that an anonymous donor has offered to match the first £25,000 that is received from individual donations of £500 or less.
Please help us to achieve this ambitious target. It is our hope that this scholarship will be seen as an appropriate and fitting way in which to help perpetuate Ros’s legacy in the fields of international art scholarship and museum practice to which she contributed so significantly.
This scholarship will benefit participants from the decorative arts sector who would not otherwise be able to attend an Attingham course.
Any donation of whatever size will be of great help in supporting future Attingham alumni and all donors will be acknowledged on the Attingham website in alphabetical order.
